CÉRET, FRANCE

Nestled at the foot of the Pyrenees, just a short drive from the Spanish border, Céret is a small, artistic town. Sun-drenched plazas, winding medieval streets, and plane tree-lined boulevards make Céret uniquely Catalan.

Céret is often called the “spiritual home of Cubism.” In the early 20th century, artists like Picasso, Braque, and Matisse lived and worked here, captivated by the town’s light, landscape, and energy. Their legacy lives on in the Museum of Modern Art.

Every Saturday morning, the charming town of Céret comes alive with one of the most beloved markets in the region. Shaded by plane trees and set against the backdrop of the Pyrenees, the Céret market is a vibrant blend of Catalan culture, artisan craftsmanship, and seasonal abundance.

Locals and visitors mingle along the cobbled streets, weaving through colorful stalls brimming with just-picked produce, fresh bread, olives, local cheeses, and fragrant herbs. Scents of roasted chickens, boles de picolat and paella fill the air.

Aside from food, you’ll find handmade pottery, baskets, textiles, jewelry and soap.

More than just a place to shop, the Céret market is a vibrant social excursion—a joyous celebration of community, and life in the South of France.

At the heart of Céret stands the Église Saint-Pierre, a beautiful stone church that anchors the town’s old quarter with quiet majesty. Originally built in the 13th century and modified over the centuries, it reflects a blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, with a striking Baroque façade added in the 18th century.

With a variety of things to do, and a relaxing pace, Céret is a wonderful place to spend the day.
