AXAT, FRANCE

Axat is the place in the Catalan region that we have decided to call home. We have a small stone village house at the top of the hill, next to the converted chapel.

Axat is tucked into a narrow gorge along the Aude River’s banks, in the Pyrenees’ foothills in southern France, surrounded by dramatic cliffs, rolling forested hills, and crystal-clear mountain streams.

We recommend dining at Pizzeria el Sogno, and don’t miss buying a baguette from the vending machine at Boulangerie Perez for one euro.

A gateway to the Cathar Country, Axat is ideally located for exploring ancient castles, hiking trails, and scenic drives through the Gorges de Saint-Georges and Gorges de Galamus. The historic “Red Train” (Train Rouge) departs from Axat and winds through spectacular countryside, offering one of the most scenic rail experiences in the region.

The village is charming and unhurried—stone houses, a riverside promenade, and a relaxed pace of life. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking, kayaking, white water rafting, canyoning, and fly fishing, while food lovers will appreciate the rustic local cuisine and nearby vineyards of the Languedoc-Roussillon.

Its proximity to skiing is also an attraction in the winter. Nearby Formigueres is a just beautiful drive away along D118.
